Hi Guys,

After the less than perfect experience with my own Google Pixel 7 smartphone, I received a new smartphone from my employer, a Samsung Galaxy A34.

Its bigger than my Pixel 7, 6.6 inch display versus 6.3 inch for the Pixel 7.
Has a very bright display as well, comparable to the Pixel 7 (1000 NITS in auto, with the slider to full bright)
Android 13

But the Galaxy A34 also has a slightly smaller aspect ratio, which make LK8000 look significantly bigger in landscape than on my Pixel 7. The black areas at the side are smaller on the A34.

I will do a flight test coming weekend to see if this one works better and does not drop the wifi connection.

Comparison A34 and Pixel 7 displays to show the size difference (picture taken with my old Nokia 8 :-) )

Comparison A34 with the Nokia 8, just to show the huge size difference, brightness seems to be the same.. but that maybe because the pictures are taken indoors without direct sunshine.:

So maybe this Galaxy A34 is a good candidate to use as LK8000 device.. it is also quite a bit less expensive, in The Netherlands only 294

Today I made a short flight with the Samsung Galaxy A34.

All I can say it worked fine, the display is very well readable in sunlight with amber sunglasses, The significantly bigger size (6.6 Inch with a slightly smaller aspect ration, makes that almost all real estate is used for LK8000!) comes in handy as well!

I did not have problems with the Wifi connection or the Bt connection with the radio, But I have not flown over a city yet, so that is still a bit of an open item to check.

Next week I will fly a competion and will use this phone for tactical navigation

Ok, I have flown a competition last week, but the wifi is just as bad with the Samsung Galaxy as with the Pixel 7.

On top of my wifi problems I also ran into problems with my old Red Box Flarm, the unit refused to send/receive data and communicate. I will spare you the 2 days of troubleshooting, but in the end I Have bought a new FLARM unit, an LXNav PowerMouse.. Connected everything, installed lates firmware and configured it with my Glider identity, used the GPS port of the S80 Vario to provide it with Power, and all works fine.

The Powermouse has Bt, so it was easy to connect to my Galaxy A34

So I have given up on the Wifi serial bridge, I already removed it from my Glider, it has never worked 100%, reading back on previous posts on this forum I see I already have dropping wifi problems since I started to use it.

Marco, are you still happy with the A34 as device for Lk? I'm looking for a replacement for my Vertica as announced in a topic a few lines higher. A smartphone may be a solution. Regards,

Hi Johan,

I have been flying with the A34 all season, it works very good, the BT connection I use now is very stable, the display is awesome! Very bright and very well readable in sunlight while wearing sunglasses. Sure it is MUCH better as your Vertica, touch screen is also more responsive.

Earlier this Year I have done a few flights with my Pixel 7 Phone, which I use every day (The A34 is my work phone and is rarely used, because we use MS teams on our laptops to communicate) Also this phone is working fine, but the A34 has a slightly bigger display, brightness is about the same.

So both A34 and Pixel 7 are good, but the A34 is significantly cheaper to buy.

Btw, I have a USB power supply on board, which is a must if you do long flights..if the phone is on all the time at full bright, the battery is empty in about 2 hours.

I have installed this one, which, in my glider, does not interfere with the radio:

Hello Marco,
Good to hear that the Samsung A34 works fine. I intend to choose this smartphone as a replacement for the Vertica. I will use an external powerbank to provide the necessary energy for longer flights (I don't like loose cables across my instrument panel).
Your Flarm has a bluetooth build in. I use the FlarmMouse witch is connected to the V7 vario by cable.
I will have to buy a bluetooth dongle from LXnav (BT 4.0 LE) to insert in the PNA-port of the vario. My smartphone with LK8000 will be connected to the vario by bluetooth.
The pairing and connecting procedure is not yet clear to me. An instruction manual would be nice to have. Is there such a tutorial available?
Regards

Hello! I have also changed phone to a Samsung (S 21 FE), and my previous was a ONE+. LK8000 beta was running perfectly.

On the samsung however, I cannot acces the folders where LK stores airspaces and waypoints etc. Therefore it is actally useles. If i use LK download manager the downloaded files find their way to LK8000, as I can see the files in system setup. But flying in Denmark I need airspace and waypoints that is NOT to be found in LKMAPS.
I have tried to create the correct folders in the mainfolder LK8000, but there is no acces to them from the open app lk8000.
I have used lk8000 for 10 years+ and would like to continue, but the problem i have makes it difficult.

I hope that maybe you or someone else can give me a hint what to do?

Regards Jesper

You will probably need to install another file manager to open all folders
I also have a Samsung S21 FE and installed this file manager:

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/marc-apps-software/files-20/files-20-6-1-release/
(Variant: 611, October 5, 2022 GMT+0200)

With this file manager it is possible to search beyond the data folder
Follow the instructions below:

LK8000
Open folder "Android" in the file manager of your phone
1. open folder "data"
2. scroll down the application list and open "org.lk8000.beta"*
3. open folder "files" for all the LK8000 files

LK8000-beta
Open folder "Android" in the file manager of your phone
1. open folder "data"
2. scroll down the application list and open "org.lk8000.test"*
3. open folder "files" for all the LK8000-beta files

The easiest way is to connect the phone to a PC/laptop and transfer the files via the path indicated above

*) the names of these folders may be confusing, but that's how Android has it organized

Just to say that,
to have .beta folder for the stable releases, and .test folder for the beta releases seems to be misleading to me. But I assume there must be some reason why.

BravoLima's reply to copying in files for Maps, Waypoints, airspace, etc using the Files app he mentioned is misleading. I have had enormous problems trying to copy files in. I downloaded his recommended File app and it indeed could allow you to see the file structure. However, Copying in files or using Paste simply would not work. Same proble with a half dozen other Android Files app. From Android 12 on, permissions are very locked down on my Nokia 8.3 Android 12 OS. My ONLY success was to use a PC with USB cable connected to the phone. On the Nokia 8.3 it generated a dialog box asking questions about copying in files and allowing access to all parts of the file system.

The method I described above works fine. I use a PC/laptop with an USB connection to move the files. If copying fails, disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it again. If anyone knows a better way, I'd love to hear it.

to copy files to LK8000 storage you need do use stock AOSP files app, this app exist on all device but can be hidden on some of them.

to add shortcut to this app you can install this : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.marc.files

Yes, that method works for me too. I simplified my notes for doing this: 1) plug in USB cable to laptop/pc 2) Swipe down on Android home screen 3) look for notification that phone is charging. 4) Select notification and "Tap for more options" 5) dialog box comes up 6) select use USB for "File Transfer". With this I have no problem copying in files.

Can't get this work on my Nokia 8.3 Android 12. I have so many "Files" apps now, it's easy to lose track.
