I haven't flown with a minimum height requirement for competitions previously, but in the current Condor 2 ESGP there is a minimum finish height set, which I can confirm is in the task correctly at 1640ft.

I have set the Glide Bar Indicator to FINISH, but it seems to show an incorrect height after rounding the last turn point.

I can't seem to post an image here so here is the raw data:-

In final glide mode. Distance to finish 6.4km
McReady 6.3
Height above Final Glide on the right side of screen +640ft (250ft safety margin)
Red Glide Bar on the left side of screen -716ft
Altimeter 3208ft
AGL 1574ft
Finish Line 1506ft
Minimum Finish Height 1640ft

If I set the Glide Bar Indicator setting to Next Turnpoint, then the two heights match, but not if it is set to FINAL.

I was expecting the Glidebar and the McReady finish height to match after turning the last waypoint. It is almost like the Glidebar is indicating Mean Sea Level, but that would indeed be weird or it is show 1640 ft above GROUND LEVEL rather than Sea Level.

Am I misinterpreting what I should see, or is it a dreaded bug?

Many thanks

Hi Bruno,

I think I have found the (?my) error!

I took it that if we used the MSL setting for the START HEIGHT, it would also use MSL for the FINISH HEIGHT. It would appear that the FINSIH HEIGHT is always AGL.

As finishes are often given as height above MSL, it would be "nice" to have that used for the FINISHING HEIGHT as well when it is selected - to my way of thinking anyway, but my wife often tells me I'm wrong.....

Cheers and Happy New Year!

(It was a toasty 44.4 C today :-)

Top Tip:
Because confusion between sea level and ground level height always has, and always will, plague aviation .....
This helps me:
Give MSL figures as 'Altitudes'
Ground level figures as 'Heights'
So
a start specified MSL = Start ALTITUDE
a start specified above ground = Start HEIGHT
a finish specified above ground = Finish HEIGHT
etc.
Does this work in other languages? (it is certainly what ICAO specifies)
Works for me; I try to be strict about it.

That certainly sounds very logical to me....

One could also try to use proper ICAO terminology ("MSL" or "AMSL" rather than "ASL" as it is used today in the .lkt files - only place I could find it actually), and use a consistent set of units for altitudes and heights in the .lkt file (today metres and millimetres respectively)

lkt file is not made to be human readable but to be machine readable and "programming language independent"...

you are free to improve the task file format documentation :

Hi Bruno. Can you confirm that the FINISH minimum height is always AGL, and is not altered by selecting AGL or MSL for the START height. I have been somewhat confused in a few times now since my opening post ;-)

Many thanks,
John
