Thanks for the above guys.xz2 is expensive. Nokia8 one can find some real good deals I might give it a shot. I also use it for skydemon when flying power hence the need for bigger screen but not for 3x the price

I will pick up my Nokia 8 in about an hour, I give a first impression tonight... maybe you should wait for that before you decide.

Skydemon is made for a Tablet, right? Nice software!

Dieghito, for your big hands you could consider the OnePlus 5T (even if it still is a bit expensive; maybe better waiting).

Hi guys,

Realy happy with my new Nokia 8, the display is briliant! First impressions... (after sunset.. will test in the sun when its there (tomorrow forcast is a cloudy day)

Brightness of my new Nokia 8 is almost the same as my old Glider Guider, just a tiny bit less bright.. in MANUAL mode and Lumens tapped to the max in LK8000 display settings menu. .. In MAX AUTO (in the android settings brightness set to automatic, with the slider all the way to the right) it should become even brighter when used in bright sunlight.

But the difference in sharpness and contrast is like day and night, nokia 8 has the highest pixel density of all smartphones out there with 534 pixels per inch or something, you cannot see the individual pixels, while on the GG they can easily be spotted. And the black fonts are more black then on the GG, where they are actually greyish when set to max brightness. sharpness and contrast makes especially the small text in topology way better readable.

Under an angle the Nokia 8 is still very well readable, brightness and colors hardly change and the colors do not shift so much as with the GG.. This should be helpful in the cockpit when your suction cup or ram mount can not be adjusted to be perfectly aligned with your eyes.

What is also remarkable is that LK8000 starts up in just 2 or 3 seconds, where on the GG it takes about 2 or 3 minutes to load the maps, flarmnet, etc. (I have LK8000 installed on the internal storage)

Also confirmed the Nokia 8 has a Barometric sensor (Baro altitude available.. nice!)

All in all I am quite sure this phone will be my friend for a loooong time. coming weekend flight test.

Nokia 8, the 2017 version!

These are on sale on many places and therefore a lot cheaper then its successor Nokia 8 Sirocco, €749 in the store where I bought my Nokia 8.. and its sold out!

The Sirocco will have an excellent display as well, read a brightness figure somewhere of about 500 nits.. but its different technology, its a P-OLED, which stands for excellent contrast and sunlight readability contrast and it is a little bigger, 5.5" but with a better screen to body ratio, so the phone will have about the same outer dimensions as the Nokia 8(2017).. On GSMArena a hands on review, but no lab tests yet. It looks like this sirocco is in many aspects a better phone then the 2017 version, but among all those Youtube reviewers the display is not the highest priority like it is for us. If you definitly want to use it for gliding I should still buy the 2017 Nokia 8, of course the low price helps a lot to make the decision.

Some screenshots made on my Nokia 8, brightness setting has no influence on the screenshot.. I hope this works to show the quality of the display a bit,

My Home screen, with my Mini Nimbus, BU :-) I took this picture with my previous Nexus 5X which had a pretty good camera, note I pumped up the color saturation a bit to make it look more vibrant..

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f_zc7M1rVgex8fpYuDdIzUc2Mmvh-qdEeg/view?usp=sharing

Zoom in to see how sharp it is!.. no jagged edges on the circle icons or the clock digits.. I checked this out on my 40" full HD led TV.. but even zoomed out to fill the complete 40 inches.. no jagged edges.

Below a screenshot of LK8000, note that the icons for the battery and the menu are clearly made on a low resolution display, because here you can see clearly the jagged edges. But the fonts, which are Clear Type.. these are razor sharp!
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YJ-uLOzK92M5MJ5OH1GGI-oV47lbRhDAew/view?usp=sharing

Tomorrow some flight testing with video I hope.. Today the weather was not so well in my area, but tomorrow promisses to be a good day for gliding.

To be continued.

Btw, The Nokia 8 has got cheaper again!.

Hi Guys!

I made my first, 1 hour flight with the Nokia 8 yesterday, and I am very happy with how it works out.

The display is very bright, and easy to read during flight, no straining or position adjusting required, taking off sunglasses, no washing out of colors and what not.. you can just easy read everything. It is just a tiny less bright than the Glider Guider whch I also had with me, so I could compare them side by side.

below some pictures, which are screenshots of my Mobius Action camera video (1080P):

First the Glider Guider:

And here the Nokia 8:

You can see the GG is a bit brighter and suffers less from glare, that is because the display of the Nokia is made of smooth glass and that of the GG of matte plastic. But you also can see the Nokia provides a much sharper image than the GG, the GG compensates by making the lines thicker.. The GG has a display ratio of 800x420 pixels, where the Nokia has a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. while the size is almost the same (the Nokia is slightly bigger, but even side by side its hard to notice).

Note that the above piuctures are not the best, it looks like the Nokia 8 has a grainy image as well, but that is not the case, that is because I made a cutout of a screenshot that was 1080P to start with so the resolution of the above picture is even less than that.

The fonts are of the clear type, which adjust for the resolution, the vilage names are therefore easier to read on the Nokia. Also that small box indicating your safety height below your arrival altitude, is now easy to read, where on the GG I always had difficulties to see what it said. So especially for the smaller objects on the display, the Nokia is better.

Annyways, Yes the GG is brighter, but less sharp and less contrast then the Nokia 8, which I think makes the Nokia 8 an excellent choice as your navigation tool inside a glider cockpit. Beside this, working with the Nokia is very fast, loading of LK8000 is done n just a few seconds and responds immediately to taps on the buttons.

Last but not least, my current Power supply, integrated in the BT module, is able to charge the Nokia to 100% so that works as well (was a bit of a concern).. The Nokia is quite power efficient btw.

Next week first cross country flights I hope, from Flugplatz Am Kruezberg in Saal a.d. Saale, in the hart of Germany near the birthplace of gliding, the Wasserkuppe :-) Will let you know how that works out as well, maybe with some better video's than I made yesterday... (I decided to not upload them as they do no good to the impression I had of the Nokia).

Thank you for information and detailed review, Marco.
I can't see the screenshots, though.
Edit: Ah, OK, it was my PC fault. Now I see it.

Yes Diego,

I tried the Nokia 8 at home as well and this is what happened.

I have set device C on Internal, so when no S80/Red Box is available it falls back to the internal GPS and barometric sensors. Then LK8000 when set to use baro altitude, finds the Phones baro sensor automatically...you get a ping sound and a message pop up something like this: "Barometric altitude available, using baro altitude" to confirm baro altitude is used.

But in the aircraft it uses the sensor of the Red box of course!

Everyday the Nokia 8 gets a little cheaper, right now €358.. a few days ago it was about €369... Wait till the slow summer vacation period begins, who knows how low its price will drop
