This is a little easy DIY project using Wifi to connect FLARM, Vario, Radio, Logger etc.. to LK8000

(Bill of material < 10€)

For those haveing Problems with the jeelabs Firmware image, here is an Arduino alternative:

EDIT 01.12.2017
I made another approach with three serial Ports based on ESP32 (successor of the ESP8266)

What is the advantage compared to Bluetooth?

-Wifi allows to connect multiple PNA, Android, Kobo at the same time (double seater)
-Wifi allows to add more devices (FLARM, RADIO, LOGGER,...) while Bluetooth is a 1:1 connection and allows only one device.
-Bluetooth is not available on Kobo devices
-The Power Consumption is not significantly higher but does WiFi has a much long reception range.

For those who are lazy or can't built it, Soartronic have suitable wifi device based on esp8266 wifi chip.
https://pulinajakso.ilmailuliitto.fi/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2669#p12958

I think it can be flashed with esp-link firmware if needed.

Hi Alphalima,
I'm trying to connect LK8000 android to condor via WIFI (testing before installation on my glider)and LK8000 says:
"unable to open port TCP Client" and also "GPS: No ComPort"
Some informations:
Flashing performed OK
The smartphone connect to the ESP-01
My PC is connected to the ESP-01 with COM1 and a rs232/ttl converter
The device configuration is:
Name Condor
Port TCPClient
IP 192.168.4.1 port 23
Any idea ?

Best regards

Henri

can you open the ESP webpage (Open Web-Browser with URL 192.168.4.1)?
if yes, can you see the NMEA Datastream?
is the baudrate correct?

I opened ESP-Link but I'm lost. There is a baud rate setting but only starting at 9600; condor transmit at 4800. Where can we see the data stream?

You can see the data in the µConsole.
Instead of Condor you can use other NMEA generation on all baudrates.
You can replay a NMEA log with a terminal (TeraTerm, HTerm) or a GPS simulator (such as Lefebure, http://lefebure.com/software/gpsutils/)

I can see the nmea data stream(use of the gps simulator and baud rate of 19200).
unfortunately, LK8000 still says "GPS: NO ComPORT" and "unable to open port TCP Client"

something wrong with the device configuration on LK8000?

Some more infos:
With TOP HAT or XSOAR, Data stream is coming in but the message on the Devices page shows:

F: Flarm sur TPC client 192.168.4.1:4343
"Bad GPS".

And the message on the navigation page is:
"GPS waiting for fix"

It cannot work with XCS or TopHat as they expect Port 4343 only. The ESP works on Port 23.

Can you send a runtime.log?
Is the ESP configured as an access point?
Is the Phone really conneted to the ESP? (Which, IP address did it get?
Do you see the NMEA stream in the LK8000 Terminal window?

What are the settings in the device dialog?

Generic
TCP Client
IP: 192.168.4.1
Port: 23?

Is the Simulator configured with good GPS fix (or with simulated errors)?

You can also check if the NMEA stream is comming in, with a Browser URL (IP:Port) 192.168.4.1:23.
For your convenience you may start to check that with a WiFi PC connected to the ESP-Accesspoint.

Good morning Alphalima,
So I'm further:

There was an erratic longitude entered in the gps simulator; I corrected it and:
still the same messages on LK8000 and no GPS fix
but TOPHAT and XSOAR works as expected
The device settings are: F: FLARM on TCP client 192.168.4.1:4353

MY LK8000 device config are:
Device A; all others are disabled
Name: Generic
Port: TCPClient
IP: 192.168.4.1 Port:23
Geoid Altitude: ON
Serial mode: Polling
Device model: Generic

Terminal: Device A (DISABLED)
No DATA RECEIVED

The error log is very large How can I send it to you?

How can this work, the ESP does not have a Port 4353
I'm afraid you have not the same setup as I described in my document.

Device A must be enabled and in non Polling mode.
You can delete the runtime.log an make start LK8000, then it will contain only the last LK8000 debug session, wich should be much smaller. You can send it to AlphaLima(at)LK8000.it
Do you see the data stream in the web browser with 192.168.4.1:23?

I've send the runtime file. My web browser(Firefox) don't accept 192.168.4.1:23; it says that this address is forbidden for safety reason

sounds like port 23 is blocked by a firewall

Just curious if this is normal behavior.

I have a Power Flarm Core and Cambridge 302 in my glider. I have made two wifi adapters and have them plugged into each of the devices.

In LK8000 I can setup the powerflarm only and it works great (it is set to 192.168.4.1 and AP mode). I can then switch it to be the CAI302 only and it works great (it is set to 192.168.4.10 and STA mode). After that, if I test with both devices being setup in LK8000 the power flarm works great but the cai302 device doesn't do anything.

Can you only use one gps source at a time?

Thanks for the help!

PS I will post my build notes in a few days.
