Interesting project of yours! Using a PCB. One question: Why do you have a FTDI in the circuit but you don't use it? I am asking because I am not sure if my chinese GPS has an USB or Serial interface, or both? In your working project it seems to be possible to communicate in both ways. Can you share something more specific? Would be very appreciated! :)
FTDI board is inside only to be able to upgrade software in Arduino in easy way without opening plastic box. Unfortunately You can't send vario input using usb protocol(through FTDI board) to car navigation devices. And also not every car navigation device has serial interface. Mio m400 and s501 have serial interface if You short pin 4 and 5 inside usb port. If You have Chinese car navigation do some research if there is any chance for serial interface. usb cable <=========> arduino board pin1 (red wire) - vcc pin2 (white wire) - RX pin3 (green wire) - TX pin4 (brown wire) - connected to pin5 pin5 (black wire) - GND
Most mini usb cables is using only 4 wires inside (brown wire is missing) so You can solder pins inside socket or buy mini usb cable with all wires populated like this one https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=111
still in big mess https://sites.google.com/site/jarosrwebsite/para-nav

Hope You like it, I dont have mio m400 personally so I dont know how it is working exactly, but my mio s501 also behaves like that. If You connect mio to usb cable and your computer, mio switch to "removable media/drive" mode. This is how lots of mobile devices is working. If You plug mio to usb charger, or change usb port to serial port mode (short pin 4 and 5) everything should work normal, You should be able to use lk8000 or car navi. Regards Jarek |

It need a USB HOST device , which is not existing among PNAs. Some android devices have USB HOST capabilities, though. It was not developed keeping in mind a connection to an external computer, as I have understood. |

I wanted to comment about the Microvario Pro. First it is USB and we have managed to get it to connect with an Android 4.0 device, but we haven't started development on any drivers.
Regarding serial integration, we're investigating this as there does seem to be some interest in integrating with PNAs with RS232 capability. If there is enough interest, we will manufacture an expansion board that can be plugged into the expansion port on the Microvario Pro.
We're going to be launching a beta for the Microvario Pro in the coming weeks, so if anyone is interested send me a PM and I can keep you in the loop when we launch. Also, let me know if you're interested in the RS-232 capability.

Hello! I am also building a pressure sensor to connect to a mio m400 with lk8000 but I have a weird behavior: I am using one atmega88 on 5V and in order to try the serial connection I am sending this test string: $LK8EX1,99520,151,0,24,5.12,*3F
I am able to receive the string correctly in the mio400 using a serial port monitor software but when running LK8000 nothing happens. I have set the device B with the correct settings and COM1 has sugested and used on the monitor.
Is there anything else I should tweak on lk8000 than that on the page 8 of the settings menu? Is the string I am using somehow wrong?
Thanks |

LK8EX is not an NMEA sentence! you must send $PGRMZ http://aprs.gids.nl/nmea/#rmz you should also send the GPS position (http://aprs.gids.nl/nmea/#rmc). If you use an external input device you must get all needed sentences from external. AL |

AL, I am using an external device only to read the atmospheric pressure. The GPS data is given by the internal GPS. I should get the nmea sentence from the internal gps to my device and them send it back in to lk8000?
