Karim (from the forum here) has sent me his KK-01 cable to test.
The KK-01 connects with a miniUSB plug to the HP314, and provides a real RS232 working from 9600bps up. The serial port is seen as COM3 from LK8000, with nothing else to do but choosing it in system setup.

In order to make it work, you need an external 5V power supply, such as the one you normally use aboard to give the HP power.
Get another USB cable, cut out the miniusb, and solder red and black wire to the KK-01.

Power supply is necessary to make the cable circuit work, and at the same time charge the 314. You normally keep a separate battery for this purpose, and do not use battery power coming from the RS232.

The KK-01 has also a protection filter against 12V erroneus feed, which would damage the 314. Theorically you could feed 12V and let the circuit lower the voltage automatically to 5.0V, but Karim says it is only for protection and not for normal usage.

Any 314 owner should consider have a real RS232 port as an input feed for NMEA, and the KK-01 does work very fine.
Karim is working on the KK-02, but he may tell us the differences.

Thanks Karim, good job!!

Hi Paolo,

Great to hear success from you!

The KK-01 is a prototyp converter i build and gave to Paolo after researching and trying and trying many nights :) It works fine for reducing the RS232 signal to TTL and the other way back. Thats the point, when you want sending and receiving DATA from HP314 PNA or similar devices. They dont have a real RS232 but a TTL and the signal levels are 3V not 12V.

I have now build my KK-02 and KK-03.

KK-03 fits into a DB9 connector housing but dont have a 5V protection like KK-01 and KK-02. So you must be sure to get real stabilized 5V from your Battery. Typically you have 5V from your glider when you did have a PDA. Some Varios like LX1600 deliver 5V Volts for PDA usage.

Building a KK-03 is easy because it uses a very common circut board you get from ebay.
KK-01 and KK-02 indeed was a real soldering job with IC and diode-transistor logic.

Yes Karim, please do a favour to all the pilots and prepare a nice KK scheme. It will become a standard with your name on..
I will host it on my web page for you, with your name.

I'm looking forward to seeing it too, thanks!

I have read that many USB chargers do not charge the 31x and that the HP charger perhaps does some signalling to switch to full charge instead of trickle charge.

Does this cable design provide full charge mode?

thanks

@Thomas: if you are not a solder pro you should build it like i showed you in the link above.

Dear Friends,

after presenting you a very easy way to produce a TTL Cable Converter for HP314 with ebay parts, i will show you the circut i used for my KK-01 cable

Courtesy to nobbi: http://www.nobbi.com/datacables10.html

Here with list of parts:

It is really nessecary to use the proper transistors and parts.
You dont need to put 9V on the 7805. You can use your 12V Power Supply from the glider

Would this work for other units like a Galileo PNA? Would like to input LX7007pro data.

Does the VBT-1 work reliably with the HP 31x? Reason I ask is some BT devices which operate in slave mode can drop the connection after about an hour.

Also- does it work with Flarm?
