Abstract: I am comparing color and grayscale e-ink display Android devices running LK8000 to decide what works best for me.

The Nokia 8 is currently considered the best Android device with color display for running LK8000 (ref.: https://www.postfrontal.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8786&whichpage=4 ).

Since a few years, there are a variety of e-ink devices with Android OS: Yotaphone 2 and 3, Hisense A2 and A6, Boyue Likebook Mars, Onyx Boox Nova and Note, Not-eReader, etc. Of these, I consider the Yotaphone 2 to be the best because of the size and because AFAIK it is the only one with a matte finish (glossy e-ink is a contradiction IMO).

So, I got both a Nokia 8 and a Yotaphone 2 to compare them and choose which one I prefer to use for running LK8000 in a glider cockpit.

I share my findings with the forum hoping it can be useful for someone else, and willing to read other experiences and suggestions with these or alternative devices. In bold the best results.

Conclusion: the Nokia 8 display performance ranges from far superior to unreadable depending on the sun position. The Yotaphone 2 offers an average grayscale view that is guaranteed in any condition.
At the moment my favourite choice is the Yotaphone 2, because of its reliability (readability and battery life). I carry the Nokia 8 as a backup, and I intend to connect them via LKnet to use Nokia barometer data in the Yotaphone.

Possible improvements:
The Nokia would improve a lot if coupled with a sunshade and a power bank (something like this https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61Tfq7WyynL._SX679_.jpg ).

The grayscale display could use a pattern (dots, dashes, crosses) to better differentiate climb from sink in the trail. For example, a line from heavy sink to neutral to heavy climb could be something like this:
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo- - - - - - - - - ------------------------ + + + + + + +++++++++##################

I've been using an OPPO A53 (android phone 500nits) for a years so.
I just added an OPPO A96 (android phone 500 nits)
I will run CU on the old A53 so I can get voice flarm alerts, and LK on the new A96, both mount on the canopy rail.

I just purchased a lenovo M8 GEN2 (android 300nits 8") to be mounted in the instrument panel. Initial test in full sun are great. We'll se what happens in a 60 deg cockpit in summer.

All 3 have at least 8hr run on full charge.

The aspect ratio of the Boox seems much better IMO, I find that telephones are too stretched for LK8000.

Unfortunately the Boox Poke 2 Colour is out of production, at the moment the only tablet with color e-ink is the BOOX Nova Air C but it may be too big for a glider cockpit. :-(

I bought a Hisense A5 Pro CC and it looks similar to Fat Albert's image of the A7. It runs LK8000 for more than 9 hours from the internal battery.
But it has no Google Services so it isn't suitable as a general device for me. If anybody is interested...

Further to Slople above, here is a comparison between the 6" Onyx Boox Poke 2 Colour screen and the 6.7" HiSense A7CC screen. The A7CC has a clear case so looks bigger than it really is, it is a 5G mid range smart phone with an 1800x900 pixel E-Ink screen.

The Poke 2 has better colour but the A7CC is way way faster, you can even watch videos on it in 'speed' mode, it also has it's own GPS but sadly, no barometer. The A7CC is a perfectly good phone, ereader and soaring instrument, Christmas has come early :-)

I just bought a second HiSense A7, the first is running XCTrack, the 2nd was intended to use with XCSoar or LK8000.

XCSoar runs perfectly fine without any configuration.

LK8000:

- I can launch it
- the "profile" menu works
- "exit" works ;-)
- "fly" or "sim" lead to a black screen after "initialising display".

In RUNTIME.log, I find the following lines:

The last line looks "interesting".

Any idea?

Where could I download older versions to try? This device does not have Google Play Store, I need the APK directly.

Nice!
Is the screen glossy or matte?
How long does the battery last with lk8000 running?

The screen is matt

I don't know, it's never run out of battery, even after 48 hours with the front light on!!!

No this is NOT the Onyx Boox Poke 2 color, it is a Pocketbook device and runs a closed version of Unix. It does have the same screen.

I bought one from Ebay for €200, it's a fine Android 9 tablet for everything except video, away from the glider I have connected to my Huawei Mate 20x via BT, in the glider I have it connected to my Flarm via BT

Runs LK8000 a treat, this screen shot was taken at around 11:00 on a gin clear day with the sun directly on the screen

Nice. Now more than ever we would benefit from user settings to enable e-ink support, "colors and dither choice should be user selectable from the settings, rather than depending on the product code that requires patches to source code" https://www.postfrontal.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9137

contributions are welcome ;)
