This is brand new project, which is in final stage: first sample is manufactured now, will be finished in 5 years at least in May 2013 at least.

Comparison of reflective and transreflective display type in same size

When this 7" will be tested, 5" small brother will followed. Larger sreen was chosen, because more HW parts were available as at 5" screen model.

Hi,
I would like to confirm that it is a great project, so I am impatiently waiting for results. In gliding (I have been gliding since 1977...) I find this device really awaited solution. Would it be possible to take part in testing or some other way of co-operation? I translate XCSoar into Polish, also the manual for this software, so perhaps... Please, if we could establish something I could help/support, contact me wolf_pg :-)

Colors are OK.
In a single seater glider, a 3,5" screen is the best size to me, 5" is the size limit. More than that covers side view, or, integrated in a panel, limits seriously other instruments.
The big issue is the type of technology. Or to increase light in screens to exceed sun light, increasing power consumption and decreasing equipment lifetime, or to take advantage of sunlight itself.
Take care that in 2/3 years we have new hardware and technical solutions,so what we buy now is not for a long period.
I do believe in the development of liquid inq screens, but I also believe in transreflective screens.
Transreflective screens are not new technology, but was not adopted in car GPS, as they have to be reliable in day and night.
The problem here is always the price.
I still use a M400 (my screen is not a problematic one)and I can read OK with a sun shader. It costed € 70 2 years ago.
I do not pretend to spend more then € 200 in a new non avionic device.
So, in my opinion, new solutions must have reasonable cost or will not sell too much.

The new liquavista technology has been tested long ago, see this video (2010) many improvements have been made after that to improve color, contrast and brightness and to make it ready for mass production.

Amazon has bought this technology from Samsung and will use it it their new line of kindles. Trend watchers have noticed that Amazon has dramatically reduced their orders for the old type of displays, which has elevated their expectations that Amazon will really come out with liquavista Kindles this year.

But you are right, connectivity with other devices is an issue, and probably the missing GPS, but once it shows its readability and brightness in full sunlight, pilots do want this in their cockpits, I am sure about that.. and solutions will be found.

But enough about this, lets talk about your device, do you really think pilots dare to install this 7 inch 600 grams display with a suction cup? I would not risk a cracking/distorting canopy for that, a ram mount to the instrument panel is more the way to go I think.. beside that it would obscure the visibility to the outside too much.. I have tried to install my smartphone beside the gliderguider, but after trying up down left right.. I decided to leave it out.. it obscrued my outside view too much in my opinion.

Very curious about your test pilot who will install it in the instrument panel, because that is the only practical way I think for gliders.

I am disagree. side mountings are possible technically, I hope, that holder will be available as option. first saiplane pilot show interest about fix "bestie" in instrument board. we will visit this guy, when cables will be fitted with suitable connectors. results will be placed here... :-)

I saw it on my eyes, lenses included, and I did not found any major color errors. but this direct sunshine, nearly perpendicular, could drift colours slightly. I will take care about this issue in following tests...

sceptic about e-book readers. their configuration, CPU output, missing communications ports and GPS (module or inbuilt in motherboard), sunlight visibility not check in real conditions... too much question marks in this moment ;-)

I bet on solutions that take advantage on the sun brightness. Advantages: readability, low power consumption and have long life on screens and autonomy.
I'm waiting for solutions with lower screen, this one is too big to fit in a glider.

Fully functional sample received – 7“unit with WinCE6 OS, 2x TTL output, 2x USB, 1x USB OTG….other specifications see first post in this thread.

Dust and moisture proof ….industrial grade design.

First photo – placed on pg. cockpit, basic, lowest backlight:


NO BATTERY INSIDE – power supply is a must, as well as at other units.

Basic power supply measurement:


Dimensions comparison with V2 and 61CS – apologize me for large scale pictures.


More photos, comparison with 61CS, smart phones, and V2 will followed soon.

GPS module u-blox with integrated 4 different “profiles” for different combinations of vertical and horizontal speeds, from “pedestrian” to “aircraft” modes, selectable by navigation program. SBAS and other more precise positions augmentation systems, Galileo included, allowed, too.

External GPS antenna in this stage used – unit „full metal jacket“ screen out all GPS signals, when internal patch antenna was tested ;-), as well as sockets for all existing I/O interfaces.

Some power supply systems are prepared for feeding this beastie Monster :-D, with price up to USD 50, 00.

Android OS avaialble upon request.

BT will be integrated later, too – for Marco, especially.

it not support Gallileo only, but also SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System), such as A-GPS, EGNOS and WAAS systems.
I work on another article about their basic features, comparison between GPS, Gallielo, SBAS ...despite their accuracy especially.

compare dimensions at first:
V2 - 135(L)* 85(W)* 13(H) mm X SPF7 - 183 x 125 x 31 mm

we start with 7" unit, because was available plastic cover molds, metal body, etc.

if this 7" unit will be tested successfully, as expected, we can continue with 5" model development IMMEDIATELY.

first 7" sample should be available in 4 weeks now, so that we can catch half of season with this 5" version
