Just an ideea,i saw the "more than impressive" work of Hari ( www.pixelproc.net) ,one of his varios ( http://pixelproc.net/pic24hj12vario.html ) can be used as ""vario co-processor" in a flight instrument. It will respond to commands on the SPI bus to set the sinktone and climbtone thresholds, turn the audio on and off, or return data such as altitude, temperature, climbrate etc."
There is plenty of room inside a Mio m400 for such a small vario.
Beat that {insert name of big vario producer}!

Seems $Dollars are not supposed to be included in CheckSums. :S
Fixed! Thanks TiGuy.

I just think that could be related to your issue

Guys,

It's been a while since I tried updating my little project.
Unfortunately, somehow it seems that I can't manage to see Barometrical Data in my new LK8 5.0...

I do get stuff in windows-terminal, I do get stuff in LK8-NMEA-Logger, but no way to get HBAR.

See below for Examples. GP... from Device A, LK8EX1 from Device B.
LK8 configged to be running at 19200 (if that matters)...

Could somebody tell me where I'm going wrong? (And yes, it's activated in Screen 5, Use Baro...)

Hello,

Does anyone know if with version 4 of LK8000 is possible to update the vario values at rates higher than 1Hz?

Thanks

no problem...
on my download section, new code works even better

pick GoFly Project option.

Hi Guys, it is a success!!! I did an elevator test today, powering the Arduino board and the MIO400 with an external battery pack and it worked great!!! you can see the video here: http://youtu.be/kKSwgqBy9JU
On the video you will see that the LK8000 vario signal reacts faster than the flytec, seems like the signal from the Flytec is more dampened than the arduiono code. Jarek thanks a lot!!! I put a link to your website on the video, I hope you dont mind, I can take it out if you wish.

Update, I was able to see the strings in Terminal CE and altitude and Vario in the LK8000, but I had to modify the code a bit. Originally I was using the Arduino UNO USB port connected to the Mio expecting to send the data via this port to the MIO. But looking at Jaros board I decided to hardwire the cable to the serial pins 0 and 1 (TX, RX) and 5 VDC and Ground (Black and Brown together), and in the code I used SerialSoftware library writing to the hardwired pins. I disabled the SerialBegin command and replaced it by mySerial.begin from the SoftwareSerial library and used mySerial.print to create the string. Something that I dont understand yet is that it only works when I have power connected to the Arduino UNO USB port, if I power the board using the power connection with a transformer it doesn't work, seems like it gotta have the power via that square USB port. I will see if an external USB battery pack still makes the trick, I am very close, more updates to come!!

Hi Guys, I am new to the forum, I am very grateful with your work and let me tell you that this is a great place with a lot of knowledge.

I have being playing with a MIO M400 and using Jaros code with an Arduino UNO board and a BMP085 sensor to send the LK8EXT1 strings to the LK800. I managed to write the code and using hyperterminal I can read the strings on my PC, but when I connect the Board to the MIO and using Terminal CE I cant see the strings on the MIO Windows CE, I can see the GPS strings coming thru port 2, but not the Arduino strings. I know the cable is good, I purchased the 5 wire miniB pig tails from Argenta, and the brown wire is connected to the black one (4 and 5 connected together to 4 on the other side), even when I connect the cable to the PC the MIO does not lock onto the USB connection icon like when I use a normal cable.
I have tried all the possible COM1 and COM2 and baud rate combinations options in Terminal CE and in the LK8000 with no success. I even played with the "device_settings.ini" file, changing ports, baud rates, enabled the one2one port, same thing with the tmc port, but still I cant see the strings coming into the MIO or Terminal CE. After much googleing and trying everything I am out of ideas, has anybody ran into this situation? Any suggestion or help is much appreciated!!! Thanks!!!!

I can provide detail of code and connections, but didn't want o make this post even longer.

I'm going to replace my Aircotec XCT with the Holux as soon as...

Well just as long as the vario input is missing. As I'm in contact with Hari, he proposed a nice option when I asked him for a recommendation to choose from his various barometer designs. I will forward this to Wolf and maybe he wants to incorporate that for the Holux CS61

quote:
Aside from SMD fine pitch soldering, knowing how to read and understand a microcontroller datasheet/manual, you will have to ensure the timing cycle of the sensor sampling is not affected by sending NMEA messages. This requires understanding the code, knowing how and where to add new code without breaking old code, ability to hook up to a scope or LA to recheck the timing, changing the clock frequency.

That said, its possible and would not be a big task for someone with embedded software and hardware troubleshooting experience (that doesn't mean a college degree in electronics). So your best bet would be to find someone with this experience and infect him with your enthusiasm for the project or bribe him with his poison of choice. If you can find someone, forward the following paragraph :

Even the coin vario should work, unless there is something I haven't foreseen. You would have to increase the clock speed to possibly a few MHz to allow you to generate a UART baud rate that is close enough to a standard baud rate recognized by the Holux, and high, e.g. 38400 baud so that the NMEA print takes less time. Then you would have to insert the code in the right place in the sensor timing cycle to print the NMEA sentence. You would then have to time the sensor cycle to see how the sensor sampling has been affected, and tweak the parameters so that the climbrate calculation is still accurate. There would be other hardware issues and practical trade offs at every step that you would have to make decisions on.

If you can't find someone to do it, and there are enough people interested to donate a Holux 61CS, I'd be happy to do it. Thats right I'm getting mercenary. But I've seen enough designs that are obviously ripoffs (with no attribution) of what I've published on the website, that there has to be something in it for me !! (I already have a gps-vario-gsm project on the shelf that keeps me occupied when I feel the urge to tinker, though I really should get out and actually fly more).

regards
hari

Right now i stick with Jaros approach , both projects are exactly what i want ( and i have bought a Skytraxx 2 ,splendid thing).

Sorry it took a bit, but found it again. Website is not indexed by search spiders so it is not easy to find, but here it is again: Machine's that goes *ping!* ( http://goo.gl/kDYgi )

Regarding ST2.0 very promising aproach. I had to return mine because I was fed up with the device freezes 3x in mid air during flight and maybe half a dozen freezes during operation at home. I heard there is a new revision out, hopefully with improved hardware and incorporating a watchdog to reset in case of freezes.
