Is it possible to find some details on what DEM and LKM files exactly are? I have used Global mapper to generate a DEM file but it was not recognised by LK8000. I would like to be able to generate my own maps.

If method of map generation was published then developers would not need to spend time generating maps. Users could do it themself. I think xcsoar had some sort of map generator. It would be great if we could have one for LK800.

With 550 maps online we dont get much requests any more.
But for your information, 80% of requests are wrong: people do not know the difference between latitude longitude east and west. Having online maps already generated is pure gold, because it allows now people from Android to instantly download their maps.
In any case, the format is public, the source code is open. Tony might help you out on details.

As Coldwind said, if your area is not covered, you can just communicate the area boundary and a new map will be added to the website. This is the primary source of maps an it covers 100% of important flying areas.
For advantaged users anyway, I agree that some tools can facilitate both developers than uses. The DEM and LKM file formats are public as LK8000 source code IS public.
If you already have a Global Mapper file you are on the correct way and you can try converting your DEM using this tool, that takes an ESRI ASC GIS file on input and convert it into LK8000 DEM ( Win binary are also pushed ) :

https://github.com/ToninoTarsi/GIS2LKMAP

So :

1) export you global mapper dem into ESRI ASC ( I not sure global mapper support it .. in case just use QGIS )
2) Use the tool above to convert it into LK DEM

In the future, maybe , some more tools will be available for managing maps.

Thank you very much Tony. Thanks to your advice and application I managed to generate a working DEM file. I use Global Mapper + SRTM 3arc sec data to generate GeoTiff. Then QGIS to convert it to ASC. Then GIS2LKMAP to generate DEM. Every think worked but my DEM files are quite big. Could you advise me on what I should pay attention to in order to make DEM files smaller? Could you also point me in the right direction on how to generate LKM file?

Many thanks

Witold

Great,

you have Global Mapper and QGIS so you were on the correct way.
For those who do not have this knowledge I just wrote this new tool ( only for DEM at the moment and in early beta) maybe can make it easier :

For topology map (LKM) you can start unzipping an existing map and look at what's inside.

Well done Tony. I just tried your tool and it works flawlessly! I use LK8000 in real flying and in Condor so I will test it for different areas. I will let you know if I find any bugs, but like I said no problems so far.
I had a look at LKM file. I didn't realise that it can be uzipped! Unfortunately it looks like it is beyond my capabilities to understand all those files and learn how to generate them. My coding and general IT skills are quite limited. It would be nice if your generator could also produce LKM files, but what you have done so far is already great and beyond my expectations. Big thanks to you and all LK8000 developers for your effort and time.
