Bruno has just added UTM support for waypoint edit-view in LK 3.1.
Still work in progress, but good job indeed! |

Ok thanks.. I had a look at the wiki page, scrolled down a bit and read "Simplified formula" and below that one of the most complex math formula's i have ever seen!... and I thought the gliderpilot community was kinda nerdy...haha!
That wiki is written for and by nerds, I was lost after reading the first two sentences ("..and uses a secant transverse Mercator projection.." wtf?!)
But at least I know it is a coordinate system to define our hoizontal position on mother earth...
Why is this such a big deal for Para's? is the normal degrees, minutes seconds not good enough?.. just curious.
Thanks.

Because all paraglider pilots at contests are given UTM coordinates, sometimes, for turnpoints. Position reporting using UTM is also much faster, via radio. And it is used for emergency. LK has a special function for that, in fact. |

Not all paraglider contests, seems to be only some countries. Maybe it is because they only have old maps that use UTM and haven't been updated to WGS84 Australia use WGS84 lat/long |

[sorry for the off-topic]

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but here's how I understand it:
WGS84 = Map Datum UTM = coordinate format
Datum and coordinate format are "independent" from each other, meaning that for any map Datum you can have coordinates written in any format.
From wikipedia: quote: "A geodetic datum is a reference from which measurements are made.
Here's an example of a given coordinate, written in 3 different formats (and in 2 different Datums)
Normal GPS Coordinates (WGS84 Datum) Decimal 38.385 -8.21167 DDD MM.MMM N 38° 23.100 W 008° 12.700 DDD MM SS.SSS N 38° 23' 06.000" W 8° 12' 42.012" Older Datum (NAD27) DECIMAL 38.38567 -8.21347 DDD MM.MMM N 38° 23.140 W 008° 12.808 DDD MM SS.SSS N 38° 23' 08.412" W 8° 12' 48.492"

Sorry, but when I go on the waypoint edit page (21) on version 3.1F, and I click on New, or Edit, I still have the coordinate in deg/min/sec format.
Did I miss something ?
I agree this is an important feature for paragliding, because when we need to add a new waypoint, it's very often given on UTM format... |

Where can I use the UTM format ? I don't find it in the configuration...
Edit: Ok, I found it in the Unit configuration (9). It works, thanks for the answer ! |
