To good to be true! This is rediculous! Probably fake. It will probably look like a Nokia 8 but the screen will be bad and all over performance will be way below your expectations of a 2017 flagship! screen will be dull and unreadable in sunlight.

Yup, it was a scam. Ebay recognized it now and removed the item from the site. That user account was probably invaded.
Oh well..

Past two weeks flying in Central Germany with nice thermal conditions.. and not too much thunderstorms... Of course I had the Nokia 8 in my cockpit.. and never ever return back to the sluggisch pixelated non responsive Glider Guider!

Here a screenshot of the many video's I made, you can see the screen of the Nokia is just as bright as the S80 Vario! Please keep in mind the picture doesn't really good to show the sharpness and contrast, because the resolution of the Video sensor is just 1080P, while the Nokia is 4K.. believe me, readability is just as good if not BETTER then that of a Glider Guider or Vertica... Under direct sunlight the Nokia 8 gets really bright and you will have no problem reading everything while wearing sunglasses.

[edit] Reduced the size of the picture a bit

So NITS aren't really The reference, isn't it? Contrast needs to be taken in consideration.

I'm still sitting on my V2 (very visible in the sun!), but sooner or later I'd need to change it since t's loosing peaces.
I was checking Samsung S9 (barometer, Galileo gps, good screen); do you think it will be readable in direct sunlight?

Right Marco, my V2 and spare V2 are showing their age, if I wanted to go with a Nokia 8, how do I connect up? My present system is: Flarm sends it's data to my Ilec SN10, the SN10 passes the Flarm data through, but also adds some, including importantly wind, which in turn is sent to my V2 using an interface cable, which also supplies power from the glider 12v supply.
Can this be duplicated with the Nokia 8?
The alternative I have considered is a Kobo, which can be bought with gps and digital altimeter added at around the same price. OK that is not a colour display, but I usually switch off the terrain, so there is very little colour showing on the V2.

@Enrico. Both are important, brightness and contrast.. If brightness is good but contrast is low, sun readability will get difficult, but when contrast is very good (like with OLED displays) sun readability can remain very good unless slightly lower brightness. S9 is very good, but more expensive and has an OLED display, this may suffer from burning in a bit after a while when you use it very often at 100% brightess for hours in gliding.

@Dave, I use Bt for sending the data to the Nokia, simple and hassle free. But there are systems and cables available to connect using a wired system (IOIO, UART, OTG), but I cannot help you with that, maybe other forum members can advise on this? From what I read here and there, it is quite complicated to set it up.

With Bt, it is simple.. where you have the cable now to connect with your V2, there the Bt transmitter is connected (like this one: http://www.k6-team.de/index.php?a=165 or http://www.soartronic.net/products (choose the Bt2 one)), pair with your phone, start LK8000, choose the paired Bt connection as the port for your device and you are good to go. Power can come from a seperate power bank to the USB port on your phone, or from a power supply connectted to your board batteries. This Bt setup should also work with the V2, so you still have that as a backup.

Its a pitty that Glidertools does not exist anymore, the Bt module I bought from Vladimir, still works great and has a seperate USB 5v/2A power supply... at the end of a 4-6 hour flight the Nokia 8 is 100% charged! The power supply of, for eaxample, my LXNAV S80 is only 1A and that is not enough for todays smartphones to keep 'em charged. So, I am very happy with the VFBT01 Bt Module, I hope it will serve me for many years to come.

Has glidertools stopped completely, or has some other business taken over the products?

Hm! Don't know what happened, I posted after your previous Marco. We use a Soartronic BT module on our DG500 to connect the Flarm to Oudie/V2, but not through the vario.

It should work just fine, the Bt is just a replacement for a wire, it sends through the serial data you feed to it.. it doesnt care how the serial data is composed..

I have now a similar setup like you would like to have, with a red box flarm sending its data to the S80 vario, the vario adding wind and Mc data, and the whole package send via the Bt to my phone.. See figure below for the whole setup (note the Nexus 5X is now replaced by the Nokia 8) I have two way communication with the vario AND the red box. I can declare a task using LK8000, the S80 software recognizes the declaration commands and opens a line to the red box. I can change the Mc value manually on both the Vario and Lk8000, and the latter will follow the setting.. only automatic Mc is not working yet, but this is a bug already fixed by Alphalima, and will be in the next release of Android Lk8000:

I replied to Marco on a separate subject recently...

On his advice I bought the Nokia 8 and am very impressed. Paid 355 US $ ($388 with tax), arrived in two days Palmdale, California. With a little help from Marco and others, it was easy to load the Android LK8000 beta from the Google play store and it seems to work perfectly. After downloading "ES File Explorer", very easy to add my custom airspace and *.cup files. I can even copy/paste from my Dropbox account!

I will probably just use BT to connect to a Nano to avoid the messy wiring stuff. My current Vertica V2 wiring in the cockpit used the Glidertools RSUSB converter. Although, I have fed external NMEA to also from my Nano blue tooth (BT). Because the latest Glidertools converter used a USB mini 10pin connector, I'm not going to mess with adapting that to give me power to the Nokia 8. Instead, I'll probably just use internal battery or supplement it with a 5v battery at around 7 ounces.

Where the Vertica V2 sat in my brief case and carrying case most of the time... the Nokia 8 can be used for a lot of other things including a navigation computer, email client, etc.

Sunlight readability is very comparable to the Vertica V2... but slightly better with deeper colors and contrast. It's not remarkably better like a $6000 full sized LXNAV ... but good enough. Here's a photo comparison finger prints and all (note the abrasion on the Vertica V2 case.. no harm.. it still works)

Hi Walt, the pictures do not show! Use the shareable dropbox links, or if you want the pictures to show directly in your post, upload them to tinypic.com and copy paste the url with the tags. (i know, lot of dodgy pop ups there, but if you click them away, it works pretty well)

Marco,

I spent an enormous amount of time researching how to share in line images from Dropbox only to find that : "Dropbox Plus and Business users: Beginning September 1, 2017, you can no longer render HTML content". That really makes me mad... since I've always shared images in this way.

Tinypic.com seems "spammy" to me ... I don't trust it.

Any other suggestions? Guess I'll have to rent my own cloud account for hosting things like this.

You could use Google drive or OneDrive (microsoft) and share the links, but then the pictures do not show directly. If you have a webpage area with your ISP, you could use that.

Googled a bit, maybe this is better (not tried yet) https://imgbb.com/
