I have tested the Dittel / TQ KRT2 radio with LK8000 Ver. 6.3 c together with the OpenVario. I use the native Dittel KRT2 driver at 9600 baud / 8 bit and tested several serial ports, which behave in the same way. I have a bidirectional communication established and can see changes made at the KRT2 frontpanel appearing in LK8000 and vice versa. For most airfields which I select in LK8000, the frequencies are set correctly at the KRT2. For some airfields (e.g. Michelstadt, Frequency 123.650) LK initially displays the correct number, but KRT2 shows 123.135. After a while (approx. 5-10 seconds, sometimes after minutes) LK8000 displays the same frequency as the KRT2. Obviously LK reads back the frequency from KRT. It looks like there is an (unidirectional) transmission problem from LK to KRT under some circumstances. It could also be a hardware issue of the KRT2 (although brandnew). This strange behaviour seems to be reproducable. The same applies, if I enter a frequency digit-wise in LK8000. Examples:
LK8000 entered frequency -> KRT2 displayed frequency
122.700 -> 122.185
120.300 -> 120.040
120.400 -> 120.140
120.500 -> 120.240
120.600 -> 120.085
120.700 -> 120.185
120.800 -> 120.030
I configured the KRT with both, 8.33 / 25 kHz channel spacing and 25 kHz only, but no effect. I also erased the frequency list in the KRT2 to avoid any kind of suspicious interaction, but also no effect. Is there a possibility to create a logfile with the (native) communication? Any help of the experts would be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance...

Could this be anything to do with the fact that what you enter using 8.33 looks like a frequency, but isn't.

be careful with splitter and GPS Filterboxes.
You might consider to put all devices in a small Wifi Network as I described here:

About the splitter and GPS filterbox...

The splitter is a hardware splitter, the one I have in mind is fully wired and should allow two way communication with the Red Box (only for task declaration). The GPS filterbox is a requirement to connect the gps signal with the transponder, it reduces the baudrate to 4800, the other two are just GPS/flarm signal pass though ports..ONE WAY.. beside that the GPS port on the S80, the transponder and flarm display don't talk back anyways, so I do not expect interference issues from that side.

BT versus WiFi.. that is a matter of personal preference I think, but my personal experience with BT in the cockpit is a very good one.. I am using BT for maybe 10-15 years now, and never had bad issues with it.. Yes it is a struggle sometimes to set it up, but once it is working it is rock steady..and range within a glider cockpit is a non discussion.

But I am always open for new ideas so I had a look at that thread, but reading the PDF file about programming an ESP whatever server.. I am lost on page two already haha! Arent there plug and play devices available on the market?

Reading further I have a lot of questions... com ports may vary, how can I find the correct com ports?, Hex addresses may vary to the chip size.. how to determine the right hex addresses? Be sure to use the right command line flags.. which flags? how do I know what to use? Where to type? Which commands? ... Whith so many open statements, very prone to make mistakes or do it completely wrong and brick the device..

Ok, right now I think best is to approach my situation as follows:

Right now the setup is quite similar in my Mini.. If you remove the S80, the radio and the splitter and connect the red box directly to the BT module A port, you have my current configuration, and this works flawless since I installed the red box 5 years ago. The FLARM connects without problems to the Nexus 5X via BT, so serial BT is supported by that smartphone, this is why I think connecting the KRT2 to the Nexus 5X via BT should work as well... If it does not, well then I still can try setup that wifi network as you proposed, if only for the KRT2 radio.

In terms of cost I only need to buy a second BT module, a splitter and some cabling/wiring and connectors. Maybe making my own BT module for just a few bucks.

OK, continue with the KRT2 radio connection via WiFi.

I have a few questions about the WiFi module manual and how to wire connect this module with the KRT2 radio

First the module assembly:

ESP-01, found and ordered
ESP-01 programmer, found and ordered
12VDC/3.3VDC power supply?? partnumber missing in the manual.. Could you please provide partnumber and where to buy?
TTL converter?? partnumber missing in the manual.. Could you please provide partnumber and where to buy?

During loading of the firmware and programming of the wifi module I suppose the module is powered via the Programmer, right? The programmer is connected to a PC via normal (mini?) USB cable. Is this a correct assumption?

Ok, now the question rises how to connect this wifi module with the KRT2 radio, I guess it must be connected to the RX and TX and GND pins of the D-sub of the TTL converter, right? like indicated below. The wifi power supply must be connected with the +12V (pin 8) and GND (pin 1) of the KRT2 plug, also indicated below.. What is missing in the manual is the pin layout of the TTL converter, quite essential for connecting other devices via that plug :-) So could you please provide the pin layout of the TTL d-sub?



I am sure I will have a bunch of questions later on, when I have put everything together and try to make it work, so please bear with me!

Thanks! Much appreciated... I know it is not the wifi thread, but this wifi module is part of my radio connectivity project

I have ordered these small PCB thingies.. this way I can keep it small and tidy and shrink wrap it in the existing KRT2 power/data cable. For safety I will add an inline glass fuse of 2 amps in the +12V line to the Wifi module power supply.

Anyway, everything is now ordered from ebay! After my 3rd gliding vacation to Schweinfurt, first thing is to load the firmware and set the parameters correct on the ESP-01 modules, and then I will brush up my soldering skills and put everything together.
