Hi guys,

I need a replacement for my Vertica V2 (sigh!).
I've seen many of you are now on kindle/kobo e-ink screens.
My requirements are:
Long battery life
Screen size around 5"
Bluetooth

I need Bluetooth to connect my Nano than can feed GPS and baro data.

Any suggestion? Does the kindle paperwhite support Bluetooth?

Thanks

Well I know this can sound a bit vapor ware but.. Vertica just told me that they got rid of their old hardware designer and they are now progressing very fast with a new partner in the UK. The vertica v3 is on the way again.

You could of course get a Kobo with gps and baro added for still a quite reasonable price from Nev Almond, then you don't need to conect your Nano. Reputedly they run so long you don't need a power feed, and are very sunlight readable. If my V2 needs replacing, that would be my current plan.

You can also take a look at the yotaphone 2. It is a superb android phone, with e-ink AND color display. Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM, OTG, ....
You can get in atr ebay for arround 150€.

Looks interesting! What about sunlight visibility, Ulli? Did you compare it with our old V2?

Thanks everyone!
The best solution would be a kobo mini with a mod/upgrade with Bluetooth chip.
I've found something interesting on the web

Problem 1: kobo mini is no more available
Problem 2: I've no experience in soldering

Mhmmmmmm

The Yotaphone2 has a quite good highres color display but not as bright as a V2. However you can run LK on the e-ink display, almost the quality and size of a Kobo Mini. You can easily switch between the screens als in flight.
Plus all the advantages (GPS, mobile Tracking, fast CPU, WiFi, Baro, Gyro, Bluetoth, ...) of a modern smartphone for a fairly low price.

Adding Bluetooth to Kobo is quite straightforward both using RN42 or HC05 modules( few euros )

https://www.vololiberomontecucco.it/vlmc/index.php/avionica/109-kobo-and-bluetooth-module-rn42

https://www.vololiberomontecucco.it/vlmc/index.php/avionica/23-digifly-air-bt-wireless-connected-with-kobo

Only problem is that KOBO has only one serial interface.

Thanks Tony

I've just bought a used Kobo mini for 25€
now I'm looking for the right bluetooth chip, did you suggest RN42 or HC05?
Once soldered on the PCB, is everything plug and play? I mean, I install LK8000, than look for bluetooth devices and connect my nano?

ciao

There are advantage and disadvantage in both:

RN42 is more reliable. With HC05 sometime I get some disconnection. Never happened with RN042.
HC05 has the advantage that is able to automatically pair. So if you want to use more than one BT source it is easier to connect. Fortunately RN42 does not need an hardware pin to enter command mode so pairing is possible directly with the KOBO. I use a telnet connection and picocom software.
At the moment I use RN42

One more question for you guys:
The new nano 4 from LXNav has wifi capabilities, will it stream gps and data to
Kobo? This would require no mods on kobo (but with much higher price!)

in Nano 4 User manual, we can read this :
"NMEA can be output to either the serial interface or Bluetooth but not to both simultaneously."

nothing about Wifi...

Today I "eradicated" the power supply of my V2; here's how my friend Stefano mended it:
https://goo.gl/photos/5s67mJ7BnGLRDUiE9
it's a "Franken-V2"

...the only problem is that now LK doesn't understant when it's charging.
