I am playing with Kobo and 5.3v Everything was fine until I got distracted after switching the Kobo on and left it in the startup page, without selecting any of the options (i.e. FLY, KOBO, PROFILE etc, etc). When I got back later and tried to start LK by pressing FLY nothing happened - screen is frozen and the only way to get out is by pressing reset button on the back.
I am able to repeat this behaviour at will by delaying the start of LK8000 after swicthing Kobo on. Never have any problems if I start LK immediately after switching Kobo on.

which kobo are you using? this is an old problem, I dont think we can fix it since the hangs happens outside LK if I remember correctly.

I am using Kobo mini. It's not a big problem (yet?). I don't know whether, because it happens after switch on and with LK start screen on, it is "inside" or "outside" of LK. I was just interested whether other people had similar experiences... Whatever the advantages of Kobo (and I like it very much), if it is un-reliable it is no good to me. |

It happened to me once, when I was indoor with a special light (neon). What happens, apparently, is that under some conditions some light filters from the Kobo frame and get to the infrared sensors that act as touchscreen detectors on the kobo. At that point, after some time, there is no more response from touchscreen. A solution has been found, quite easy: protect the borders with a small edge so that perpendicular light cannot get into the frame at the borders of the screen. Maurizio here on the forum is an expert about this matter, he has been experimenting on this for some weeks, successfully, feeding Kobos to dozens of pilots here.

That's very interesting! and as you say should be easy to do. Is "Maurizio" Maurizio Germani? - this was the only member with that name I have found here? |

I have googled up the subject yesterday and found a lot of discussion on the subject on other forums.
but... I have two Kobo mini. One hard wired with BT module and another that I planned to test with OTG connection. After I have experienced this problem with BT wired Kobo, I have installed LK on the other one (the un-modified one). Remarkably exactly the same problem can be repeated - if you switch it on and delay pressing either FLY or SIM, the screen freezes. So I have two Kobo mini, one modified and one original both having identical symptoms. I have tried it in the sunlight and at night with LED lamp only - light seems to have no bearing on what is happening (will have to try to repeat it now in the dark room).
Also - similar to what Aleksander is describing, I had few times the problems on exit as well. On exit the screen goes blank, but power doesn't switch off (I can see it from LED on the BT module still flashing). Reset button doesn't work and the only thing that eventually got things going was to disconnect battery... |

Darkroom test results:
I switched both Kobo mini on, immediately put both of them inside their own boxes and walked away without selecting either FLY or SIM. Inside the boxes, there was clearly no light... When I came back later and tried SIM or FLY, both screens were frozen.
What I would dearly love is for someone to try to replicate what I am doing (it is remotely possible that I have two nuff Kobos?) |

It is certainly a mistery to me. I mean, I see no reason why the software would lock up on the startup screen. Not yet, at least. Normally I would say it is the touchscreen going nuts, but I cannot exclude without checking first that something else is taking over at that stage. I need to check the startup phase and I will do it in the next few days. Whatever it is, it never happens in flight. I think the shutdown random problem is not related, that is probably another issue with the additional modules not managed correctly during the poweroff change state.
This said, the Touch Mini is very nice but uncommon among pilots, mostly using newest hardware such GloHD which is quite cheap as well. I would say these toys are amazingly cheap, compared to what we used to pay a PNA only a few years ago.

Thanks! I will carry on experimenting. As you say these things are so cheap!
As far as shutdown is concerned (at least in my case) the suspect is BT module - I never had similar experiences on the un-modified Kobo.
Are you saying that other Kobos (Glo etc) are more reliable and better for what we do?
I might have to revise my choice...

Solution found thanks to Maurizio. You must upgrade firmware by connecting kobo to internet one time. Current old firmware has a bug solved in latest version.
Bug is: after a certain time of inactivity the touch is disabled. |

According to MobileRead.com, the latest firmware is: Kobo Mini - Mark 4 - Jan 2016 - 3.19.5761
I have downloaded it and my Kobo is now updating - it seems to be taking long time (I have safely an image of SD card, just in case...)
Will report success (or otherwise) |
