I flew a task on Wednesday in a friend's ASW24 (small panel) with the Kyobo receiving GPS data from my Galaxy Note (set to portable hotspot mode) over Wifi using TetherGPS.
While in the air but before starting the task I had an issue with the Kyobo which froze requiring a re-boot, I believe this was due to the Galaxy Note losing GPS or the WiFi connection failing (I had put the Note in the map pocket).
After re-boot and re link, the Kyobo ran for 3.5 hours without a problem, the screen is so good that once flown nothing else will do, the device is response is instant and the big buttons/menus/lists easy to press in the air.
The half obscured instrument is the Altimeter, no cables at all, the Kyobo battery will last the flight!

Since this flight I have made a custom holder for my RAM ball which is smaller than the Kyobo so I don't have to use RAM's clumsy tablet mount.
Edit - The next task will be to fly with LK8000 on the Kyobo RDP'd to a UMPC, no weather until next week in the UK, sadly :-( |

Too big for my taste.. It should never obscure mandatory instruments like an Altimeter!
But great that it works! I have been googeling Mirosol, and it is expected better and smaller displays wil come out, to be used on Smartphones and Tablets this year or next year.. depends on how many Mirosol can make, right now they are not able to mass produce these displays, but a bigger factory is built right now.
Looking at the picture, it is running XCSoar, right? So how would you manage to run it LK8000, while it is an Android device?
Very interesting this development... will keep an eye on this.
Keep us posted Albert!

Hello all. I am currently testing a brand new device – which I hope to be in a position to market quite soon. The basic specification is as follows:
Processor: 533 MHz. Operating System: Windows CE (6.1) GPS Engine: SiRF Star III (built-in antenna) Display: 5”, TFT LCD, 480x272, 800-1000 NITS, Sunlight Readable!
Our first priority was to test the GPS Engine. After exhaustive bench tests, I managed today (19 June) to test the unit in the air for the first time. I flew a short task two different instruments in the glider:
1. EW MicroRecorder (which is fully IGC approved including world record claims) - feeding GPS Position & Pressure Altitude to SeeYou Mobile (running on an HP HX4700)>
2. Test Unit – running LK8000 and fed only with GPS Position from the internal SiRF III GPS engine.
The attached screen shot, showing both traces, is taken from SeeYou desktop and magnified many times so that one thermal climb almost fills the screen. The differences between the two traces are negligible and well within the tolerance for two completely different GPS engines. I’m happy with the result!

The display on the Sample Unit was also appreciably better than the HX4700!
More tests tomorrow!
Kind regards GliderGuider

| I think your device is CE 5.0 , not 6.1. That's the Vertica V2 which I too have been sampling in the weekend. Nice unit indeed. |

@ Coolwind: No, its definitely Win 6., but I dont think that this is a big issue! GPS performance, display and interface are my priority here.

Does it have Bluetooth SPP on board? if so I might be interested.

This is the Windows Mobile 6.1 (based on Windows CE 5) device I have tested during the weekend. It comes from Vertica, it will be probably named V2. It has BT SPP and COM port on miniusb (2 serials), 480x272, and it is very good in the sunlight.

Screen is equivalent in visibility to the V1, or maybe it is even a bit better although at a lower resolution. In any case, during flight it is like having a piece of paper in front of you.

@ Marco - Yes, it has Bluetooth SSP, Serial Port, and a Micro SD card on board. It is not from Vertica, but sounds very similar. Today I plan to test it with a selection of external interfaces e.g. loggers, FLARM units & Varios. I'm testing it with both LK8000 and SeeYou Mobile. So far the results are very encouraging.

Cool! When will it be available for sale (question for both, V2 or the other one)?
(no, I am not abandoning my Smartphone ;) it is for a friend of mine)

Hi,
Does the V2 solves the GPS "problem" present in V1?

@ Coolwind and Allanart These 2 new devices, do you have more pictures in different sunlight-conditions (different angles)? What about battery-life? Are you able to make a comparison with the HOLUX GPSmile 61CS?
