Posted - 08/03/2012 : 16:46:16 I just got the Vertica V1 and I wanted to compare it with my HP310 and Dell Streak 5 (Android). Today It's really dark outside, so I took one picture inside just to compare, and I have to tell that V1 almost bright my hole apartment! :)
My next step is to get the GT Vario.
First of all, the package:

The V1 boot screen (really nice!):

And now the V1 vs. Dell Streak vs. HP310 (all devices in Full Brightness):

As you can see the V1, it's much better, it really put HP310 miles away! And Dell Streak doesn't look so great beside the V1.
Now I'm just waiting to get a really sunny day to test these 3 devices side by side.
I really had a good impression about V1 as soon I got it in my hands, really light device if we take in count the size of it (5" screen). When I turn it on for the very first time, I though I got blind because of the bright color of the screen.
I played a little bit with it, trying to understand the menu, and how customize it can be. I would like to change the GPS icon but until now I had no luck and it's not a big deal! The favorites menu it's really handy, you can create a shortcut to the Rotate program. I will try to give you some hints about V1 but now I need to play more with it. :)

Thx!

this is very nice unit, transreflective display. But.... end price is requested around 350,00 EUR, fairly: include some maps ("mynav system"). I have it in my hands on IFA fair in Berlin last year.

not seen yet, "sunlight readable display" is ver nice sentence, covering transreflective displays with better grade of TFT ones both; unknown resolution; end user price 379,99 EUR (road maps Germany/Austria/Switzerland)or 495GBP (with Germany map)
mynav500 is nice, but if I had good info, this model is not manufactured by Holux => different displays.
all of should be "unlocked", third party software support is not shown there....
there are some other manufacturers, e.g. Toppe, magellan, Themap, etc.... but their intend to play with relatively high end user prices.... :-(

Terrible at any resolution lower then what according to your experience?
The A-rival has 320 X 240 Pixel, 65k, the Ibex too and so the same counts for the Xplova G5, because here is what Xplova support wrote to me: quote:
The LCD resolution of G5 is 240x320.
If you want to make LK8000 run on G5, I strongly recommend you install LK8000 on a SD card instead of internal flash unless you are 100% sure what you are doing, because G5 might refuse to connect to your computer or Xplova’s PC applications might not be able to function correctly after some folders/files on the internal flash are modified.
A pitty, because VDO can be found for a short period this days as pieces to sell out at 180,- Euros |

The size is small, 3.5 inches, and resolution is terrible at 240x320. The internal sensors are not supported by LK. Overall the display size and resolution is unacceptable. |

Dear Chris, I am agree with your idea, basically. I used similar admittance, when I was searching suitable GPS units myself.
Well I checked again tonight, because I don't feel like doing ordering and evaluating too many times.
So I found this one that seems really interesting with 8hours battery and 240x320 pixels:

 falk ibex 40
and another one is promising 8h battery and even a barometric sensor
 xplova g5
and last but not least with the same features
 VDO GP7 / mynav 500
Does anybody have experience regarding those three?
I would like to have the Holux 61CS, of course, but nobody can deliver yet. So I'm looking around.

Reality is rather different, because there is any other possibility to check "sunlight readable displays" as buy samples....so, my friends received bike/car navigations, more than 10 pcs, in last three years ;-) . When you ask for exact sreen type, which is proof for airborne use, potential manufacturer representative answer is usually ".... what is it?" or "...yes, this device is equipped with this kind od of display. [pause].....but can you explain me, what are you speaking about?" .
I found, that small manufacturers number only are able to offer suitable and well priced units, fingers on your hands will be enough for this purposes;-).
But I wish you good luck....I could be too much pesimistic ...

This gives me something to think. Doesn't bikers have the same situation (or maybe worst while riding through rain).
So I made a little research and found most motobike GPS where torn down regarding display readability. Only this one had a good review (regarding display quality under direct sunlight:
NavGear "TourMate SLX-350" available starting with 169,- Euros
Any one having experience with this one or the predecessor and LK8000?
There is also a ARIVAL NAV-PNX 35 that could be a match at 179,-
Well Battery live and screen resolution matters as well. Otherwise we could use the 39,- Euro solution below and pimp with LK8000

I have made comparation tests with gloves on FT 130 and 61 CS.... (not in flight - to be honest). You can manage LK8000 on both. The only different is comfort on large screen, if you used gloves without any stylus. I have some technical solution with very short stylus, 3-5 mm length, fixed safe on gloves fingertip ;-).
Did you use it in portrait or landscape mode? |

Posted - 24/04/2012 : 11:26:34 The 61CS and Funtrek in my opinion look absolutely different under sunlight. Unless my CS61 is defective, it cannot be compared to a funtrek. If you switch off the light of the 61, it will be hard to be seen unless a strong sunlight is exactly perpendicular. The funtrek will be perfectly readable nevertheless.
I wouldnt say they have the same screen, not at all. The 61CS is comparable to V1 as brightness and sunlight visibility. But it is not comparable to a Funtrek, which is the very best screen I have ever seen.

Now if only I could be confident that the 61CS has the same readability of the FT130 ... anyone has got any pictures side by side?
both displays are made by same technology and by same manufacturer...61 CS has to arrive me today...I will try to do it ;-)

Posted - 23/04/2012 : 20:55:02 I can compare it on a real flight If Wolf send me a sample to test :D
Berto, in fact the V1 doesn't look great on the picture but I could see it perfectly and was the only I could use with my gloves. |
